Fish fries are synonymous with the advent of the 40-day Lenten period. Churches, social halls, volunteer fire departments and restaurants swing into action to feature fried or baked fish sandwiches, dinners and platters. But the menu does not stop with just fish; it also includes sides such as haluski, pierogies, stewed tomatoes and applesauce. Some churches go all out and offer Boom Boom shrimp dinners and tacos, macroon bit tum (dough dumplings in garlic and lemon sauce) and clam chowders, specifically the New England kind. Here’s an interactive map of places in Allegheny County that offer fish fries during Lent.
