From "psychiatric ghettos" to prisons, the mentally ill have few havens.
In Allegheny County, housing for people with mental health diagnoses that is supported by the Department of Human Services is found in 23 suburban municipalities and 14 city neighborhoods. Places hosting the densest concentrations of county-aided mental health housing include Glen Hazel, the Middle Hill District, Wilkinsburg, Homestead and Rankin -- neighborhoods that also face public safety challenges.
Dots represent state-licensed residential facilities for people with mental illnesses; some, but not all, house people funded through county programs.
