On an un\u00adsea\u00adson\u00adably warm No\u00advem\u00adber morn\u00ading, Lucy Tut\u00adtle-Smith steps into a small mo\u00adtor\u00adboat to head out on the Al\u00adle\u00adgheny River to coach a group of in\u00adter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate and ad\u00advanced row\u00aders from the Steel City Row\u00ading Club.
\n\u201cThis may be our last time on the river,\u201d she shouts to the two quad sculls pre\u00adpar\u00ading to launch.
\n\u201cYou have been say\u00ading that for weeks!\u201d re\u00adplied a group of row\u00aders as they pushed off the dock.
\nMs. Tut\u00adtle-Smith has been in\u00advolved with the group since 2003 when her son be\u00adcame in\u00adter\u00adested in row\u00ading in high school. Since then she has spent much of her time mak\u00ading sure the club pros\u00adpers through vol\u00adun\u00adteer work and even\u00adtu\u00adally be\u00adcom\u00ading a staff coach. The club\u2019s three-story boat\u00adhouse on the bank of the Al\u00adle\u00adgheny River in Verona opened in 2010 and, in ad\u00addi\u00adtion to over 200 mem\u00adbers, it serves as home base for five high schools. Ms. Tut\u00adtle-Smith now spends much of her time as a coach talk\u00ading about style and tech\u00adnique of row\u00ading, but her pas\u00adsion for the sport is rooted in the sense of com\u00admu\u00adnity that de\u00advel\u00adops in the club. \u201cYou de\u00advelop strong bonds with the peo\u00adple here, it\u2019s a very wel\u00adcom\u00ading group.\u201d
\nFor some club mem\u00adbers, the spirit of com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion keeps them go\u00ading. \u201cIt\u2019s very ad\u00addic\u00adtive,\u201d said Karla Isen\u00adberg of O\u2019Hara. \u201cIt\u2019s the elu\u00adsive 10 per\u00adcent. The first 90 per\u00adcent is pretty sim\u00adple to fig\u00adure out. It\u2019s find\u00ading the lit\u00adtle things that make it per\u00adfect. And you get to be with your friends work\u00ading to\u00adwards a com\u00admon goal.\u201d<\/p>\n
