The church unveiled the Mary Stone Black College Bus Tour Exhibition Hall to honor the woman who started an annual tour that eventually took more than 3,000 Black students on visits to historically Black colleges and university\u2019s (HBCU) from 1982 to 2021. Mr. Moses took the tour in 1984; Ms. Epperson\u2019s daughter Sharon took the tour in 1985. Mary Stone, who attended South Carolina State, an HBCU, later earned a doctorate in counseling, and worked as a counselor at Westinghouse High School. According to Ms. Stone\u2019s daughter, Carol Stone-Taylor, Mrs. Stone came home from work one day in tears because one of her Black students knew nothing about Martin Luther King Jr. \u201cDo something about it,\u201d said her husband Henry. Ms. Stone took up the challenge and created the tour, which took students to 20 schools in a number of states. Students who visited HBCUs on Stone\u2019s tours often became the first in their families to earn college degrees, Ms. Stone-Taylor said. The students boarded buses in the spring and covered nearly 2,000 miles, from Pennsylvania to Florida to Alabama, according Malik G. Bankston, who served as the tour\u2019s first Vice President. He said Ms. Stone\u2019s effort, one of the first of its kind in the country, ended in 2021 but has spawned four similar efforts in the city. Ms. Stone died in 2006.
