{"id":5370,"date":"2017-01-14T01:17:44","date_gmt":"2017-01-14T06:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsinteractive.post-gazette.com\/photos\/?p=5370"},"modified":"2017-01-14T09:34:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-14T14:34:00","slug":"the-joy-of-steelpan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsinteractive.post-gazette.com\/photos\/2017\/01\/14\/the-joy-of-steelpan\/","title":{"rendered":"The Joy of Steelpan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"libPageBodyLinebreak\">Leigh Solomon Pugliano grew up playing the steelpan, performing in her first show at age nine\u00a0and joining her father\u2019s band at 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"libPageBodyLinebreak\">\u201cI was really young when I would stand up on stage at the microphone and teach an adult essentially about this instrument. I like the confidence that I got from that,\u201d she recalls. Ms. Pugliano wanted to make sure she was helping to build the next generation of players and builders, so in 2014 she founded the nonprofit Barrels to Beethoven.<\/p>\n<p class=\"libPageBodyLinebreak\">She regularly teaches steelpan workshops to children and adults, often joined by her three daughters. There\u2019s a low barrier to being able to play the steelpan, which is why, Ms. Pugliano believes, it keeps new players, especially children, wanting to learn more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"libPageBodyLinebreak\">\u201cI get so much joy from it [steelpan]&#8230; I often say this isn\u2019t fair for me to be this happy when I hear or play this instrument, or teach or talk about it\u2026 It\u2019s like my hand or a finger.
