Jan. 20, 1980: In Super Bowl XIV, Bradshaw was named the game’s MVP after completing 14 of 20 passes for 309 yards. PG photographer Joyce Mendelsohn was new to Pittsburgh; she’d been working for a small newspaper in Florida when the Post-Gazette hired her in 1979. She was assigned to cover the Steelers and, within months, found herself photographing Super Bowl XIV in Pasadena. “It was an incredible experience,” she said. “But a little nerve-wracking.” Mendelsohn flew to California on the team plane — she sat across from starting tight end Bennie Cunningham — and shot color slide film for a souvenir book published by the PG. The Steelers defeated the Rams 31-19 and won their fourth Super Bowl ring. Mendelsohn now works as a picture editor at the PG.
