Oct. 18, 1948: The floor next to Henry Wallace’s feet shows splatter from the four eggs dropped on him during his speech at Duquesne Gardens. The case was never fully cracked, however, as the egg-tosser(s) was/were not found.
He didn’t get much of a break on his politics, either. An editorial in The Pittsburgh Press argued, “This newspaper can see no merit in Mr. Wallace’s candidacy. But the way to beat Mr. Wallace is to vote against him — not toss eggs.”
“We hope Mr. Wallace will not look on the egg incident as a sample of the way Pittsburgh treats visitors.”
Mr. Wallace was defeated by President Truman that November.
