Pulitzer-winning Pittsburgh photographer captures America

1991: Mr. Kaplan sought to capture the diverse lives of American 21-year-olds – from a Mexican immigrant in San Diego to a model in New York, from a male prostitute in California to an NFL rookie for the Detroit Lions.

“I wanted to look at American society through the eyes of people who were just beginning their adult lives,” he said.

“Some places I chose because I knew I could crash on somebody’s couch.”

His photograph of “Phil: Teen Idol” holding a snake is perhaps the most famous photograph in the series. “That’s been bootlegged for T-shirts all around the world,” he said.

The caption read: “With boyish bravado, rock star Phil Anselmo, the lead singer of Pantera, shows off his favorite pet.”
