Oct. 26, 1976: This photograph, taken at the old Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, shows Pitt running back Anthony “Tony” Dorsett with President Gerald Ford and Johnny Majors, who coached the University of Pittsburgh Panthers to a national championship that year. On his visit to Pittsburgh, President Ford campaigned for re-election, having completed the unfinished term of Richard Nixon, who resigned the presidency in 1974.
President Ford knew all about defeat and glory on the gridiron, having played center and linebacker at the University of Michigan, where he led the Wolverines to national championships in 1932 and 1933. He lost the 1976 election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
