Circa 1950: Our files contain hundreds of images showing Pittsburgh as a dirty, soot-covered host to heavy industry. Thick black smoke once stained our laundry, gravestones, buildings and skies. But Pittsburgh could also be a place of staggering beauty, as photographer Stewart Love proved with this picture, shot from the roof of the Grant Building.  We were unable to to determine exactly when this photograph was made. Love shot several pictures of the city at night in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Silhouetted in the foreground is the 229-foot tall tower of the historic Allegheny County courthouse.
