My grandfather, Walter Kretz, worked at Horne’s in 1936. He was one of many employees who rushed to move inventory from the ground floor to upper floors to save it from rising floodwaters. He called my grandmother on the party line to let her know that he would be staying there until the water receded. “Where will you sleep?” she asked. “We have a mattress department, dear,” he replied. I’ve never seen this photo before, but it has special meaning for me and my family. PS – I worked at Horne’s in Northway Mall as a college student, too.
