March 4, 1956: The Pittsburgh Press claimed Stewart Love was the newspaper’s “aerial” photographer because he often climbed some of the area’s tallest structures to make pictures. This portrait was shot by reporter Leonard Thompson while he and Love covered the installation of neon lights that forecast the weather from atop the Gulf Building.

Love joined the Press staff in 1947 and his pictures soon became a fixture in the Sunday Roto magazine. According to his obituary (Love died at age 64 in 1981), Love’s pictures were published in publications such as Life, Time, Look and Saturday Evening Post. It was Love who made the first successful night color photograph of Niagara Falls in 1937. He was a lover of opera and counted among his friends the artist Andrew Wyeth.
