Fishing a car from the Mon

Sept. 7, 1937:  Here, a coupe owned by Patrick McDonough was pulled from the Monongahela River near the foot of Stanwix Street.

It was a bad day for McDonough. The car began to roll downhill after he’d parked, exited the vehicle and locked the door. Then, as he tried unsuccessfully to stop the car, it ran over his foot. His wife Mildred showed up to claim the automobile as it was being dragged from 15 feet of water. Despite her protests, police insisted on towing the drenched vehicle to the city garage, “presumably for parking in the river,” read the original caption in the Pittsburgh Press.
