Oct. 29, 1964: Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater campaigned in Pittsburgh five days before the presidential elections. At a Civic Arena rally the Arizona Senator was buoyed by “a frenzied, explosive ovation,” according to The Pittsburgh Press.
The photographer used a red grease pencil to mark this picture on this “proof sheet” for print — the caption read, “Goldwater greeting the Pittsburgh crowd at the Civic Arena.”
“Even before he was acclaimed at the Arena, Senator Goldwater confided privately to a select group of Republicans here that he senses a definite swing to his candidate,” said The Pittsburgh Press.
Barry Goldwater was defeated by Democrat Lyndon Johnson in the presidential election on Nov. 3, 1964.
