Pittsburgh faces: Pulitzer-winning photography

1991: In “21,” Mr. Kaplan aimed to find the similarities between these young people, rather than their differences.

“I try to build bridges between people who seem culturally disparate,” he said.

“We all want to be loved, we all want to be respected, and we all want to find meaning in our lives.”

Of “Frank: Adrift in Appalachia,” Mr. Kaplan wrote: “Just 21, Frank Cline’s face is already weathered by a life of poverty. He is unemployed and a school dropout.”
