Oct. 19, 1986:\u00a0<\/strong>Escape from the music of Journey was impossible in the 1980s. Steve Perry\u2019s soaring tenor was like the Rubik\u2019s Cube \u2014 it was everywhere. Journey songs like \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Believin\u2019\u201d and \u201cFaithfully\u201d gave the decade a sometimes heavy and often sappy musical backdrop. Never was a band more perfectly matched to an era.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh Press photographer Carol Morton shot this picture of Perry and guitarist Neal Schon during the first of two Journey shows at the Civic Arena in 1986. Playing bass for the band on this tour was Randy Jackson \u2014 yes, the same Randy Jackson who\u2019s now an American Idol judge. The \u201980s remain with us.<\/p>\n

Journey continues to record and perform \u2014 minus Perry. New lead singer Arnel Pineda was hired after Schon saw YouTube videos of him singing Journey covers for a band in the Philippines. And the music endures. \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Believin\u2019\u201d was heard in the final episode of the HBO series \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d and performed by \u201cAlvin and the Chipmunks\u201d on the 2008 album, \u201cUndeniable.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
