Roosevelt wowed Pittsburgh back in the 1930s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of the White House press corps said it was far and away the biggest crowd \u00a0he had drawn in this campaign. One newsman, familiar with Pittsburgh\u2019s voting pattern, cracked: \u2018And just think\u2026 most of these people are Democrats.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf cheers were votes,\u201d Pittsburgh Press wrote that day, \u201cAllegheny County Republicans today could definitely predict a resounding victory here for Dwight Eisenhower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The excitement and enthusiasm were so great that President Eisenhower forgot to retrieve his coat from a hook at the Hunt Amory. The president\u2019s motorcade was halfway to the airport when word reached Police Supt. James W.
