1991<\/em><\/strong>: Mr. Kaplan sought to capture the diverse lives of American 21-year-olds \u2013 from a Mexican immigrant in San Diego to a model in New York, from a male prostitute in California to an NFL rookie for the Detroit Lions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to look at American society through the eyes of people who were just beginning their adult lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome places I chose because I knew I could crash on somebody\u2019s couch.\u201d<\/p>\n

His photograph of \u201cPhil: Teen Idol\u201d holding a snake is perhaps the most famous photograph in the series. \u201cThat\u2019s been bootlegged for T-shirts all around the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
