Oct. 18, 1948<\/em>:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The floor next to Henry Wallace\u2019s feet shows splatter from the four eggs dropped on him during his speech at Duquesne Gardens. The case was never fully cracked, however, as the egg-tosser(s) was\/were not found.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t get much of a break on his politics, either. An editorial in\u00a0The Pittsburgh Press argued, \u201cThis newspaper can see no merit in Mr. Wallace\u2019s candidacy. But the way to beat Mr. Wallace is to vote against him \u2014 not toss eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope Mr. Wallace will not look on the egg incident as a sample of the way Pittsburgh treats visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Wallace was defeated by President Truman that November.<\/p>\n
