Oct. 8, 1961:<\/strong><\/em> This farmers market on West Lacock Street on the city\u2019s North Side attracted more than 4,000 customers on an average night. Here, you could find fresh tomatoes, peaches, corn and cabbage, sold by the bushel or peck, as well as live chickens and ducks brought in wood cages. Business boomed after 9 p.m., when Downtown stores closed. Vendors sometimes worked until midnight.<\/p>\n

The Original Farmers Market, as it was known, was incorporated in 1919. Back then, it was located on the Mon Warf. In 1938 it moved to the North Side and stayed there until the early 1970s, when construction of Three Rivers Stadium forced another move, this time to Heidelberg. The market now is located near Cecil.<\/p>\n
