Oct. 28, 1968:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Nixon Dresses<\/p>\n

Yes, Richard Nixon\u2019s campaign designed paper dresses for its female supporters. Nixon paper dresses had blue stars and \u201cNIXON\u201d printed in red capital letters on a white background.<\/p>\n

This Pittsburgh Press photo captures the \u201cbrightly clad young Nixon Girls\u201d lining an aisle at the Civic Arena to greet Nixon on his arrival to the rally.<\/p>\n

Introduced by the Scott Paper Co. in 1966, the Op Art inspired paper dress quickly became a fashion trend. They came in four different sizes, had different prints and sold for $1.25 in grocery stores. Retailers also offered raincoats, gowns and undergarments made out of paper.<\/p>\n

There was even an Andy Warhol inspired paper dress, produced by Campbell Soup Co. It was called the \u201cSouper Dress\u201d and marketed as \u201ca smashing paper put-on that could only come from Campbell.\u201d The print on the dress consisted of four rows of identical soup cans printed around the dress.<\/p>\n
