Pittsburgh was never New York City, and none of these former ad industry players could be confused for Don Draper, Roger Sterling or any other \u201cMad Men\u201d characters.<\/p>\n

Still, it\u2019s virtually impossible to look through the folder labeled \u201cADVERTISING MEN\u201d in the PG\u2019s photo archive and not imagine Pittsburgh\u2019s own smoky ad agencies of the era. The two-part final season of \u201cMad Men\u201d premieres Sunday night<\/a>, so we decided to give you a flavor of \u201cMad Men\u201d characters, \u00a0Pittsburgh edition.<\/p>\n

The folder contains at least three decades\u2019 worth of players in the city\u2019s advertising business: hundreds of white male faces employed by dozens of agencies.<\/p>\n

And, yes, plenty of skinny black ties and crisp white shirts.<\/p>\n

Notably absent, of course, are women and any racial diversity. In the inch-thick folder, there are but two small headshots of women. Ann McFadden, vice president at Ketchum, MacLeod and Grove Inc., was one. Both she and another Ketchum executive, Rita Frankel, didn\u2019t become vice presidents until the late 1970s.<\/p>\n

McFadden was featured prominently in an excellent Pittsburgh Magazine feature<\/a> about the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor its size, Pittsburgh was a major advertising town,\u201d she told the magazine.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack then, Pittsburgh was still the Steel City and the nation\u2019s third-largest corporate headquarters, which made it a nexus for advertising agencies (a City Directory of the time lists more than 70),\u201d Mike May wrote.<\/p>\n

Firms like Ketchum and Burson-Marsteller were then \u2014 and remain today \u2014 major firms, though the city\u2019s hard times of the 1980s brought mergers that swallowed others.<\/p>\n

As for the puma, we at \u201cThe Digs\u201d scratched our heads, let\u2019s put it this way: we are just glad no one in that advertising office was swallowed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
