Gloria Dei Church has had an active Episcopal congregation since 1845. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1942, six years before Independence Hall. The congregation maintains the church, its ministry, and the grounds. The National Park Service has provided the church with additional land to act as a buffer to the encroaching urban environment.
