The Year of the Fire Monkey is upon us.
It began Monday, and in anticipation of its arrival the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill was filled last week with color, movement and sound. And, of course, you can’t have a Chinese New Year celebration without a dragon — three were on hand at the JCC.
The last time the fire monkey rolled around was 1956. That year, Aretha Franklin released her first album, Elvis Presley gyrated on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and crisis engulfed the Suez Canal.
What will this year bring? We’re making no predictions, but any year that begins with the grace, beauty and power on display at the JCC can’t be all bad.
