From left, Shahzan Khan, 19, of Oakland, Emily Suarez, 21, Atticus Shaindlin, 20, both of Shaydside, Larry McKay, of Squirrel Hill, and Amanda Ripley, 22, and Cate Hayman, 20, both of Shadyside, sing “We Shall Overcome” on Forbes Avenue, blocks from where an active shooter shot multiple people at Tree of Life Congregation synagogue, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, in Squirrel Hill. The singers all met at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, and reached out to other members of the department to come sing in harmony with them to raise money for the victims of the shooting and their families. “It’s very important in times like these to see the bigger picture,” said McKay, who came up with the idea. “We need to fight the forces of fear and come together to share love and light. Right now there’s organized forces spreading fear and xenophobia, this is a societal sickness that can only be solved with action, protest and solidarity.” He said workers from the Turkish Kebab House restaurant across the street brought him tea and food as they sang in the rain to passers by.
