Eid al-Fitr

On Wednesday, The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh held a celebration of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting to detach from worldly pleasures in Islam, at Flagstaff Hill in Oakland. In the sun’s golden glow not long after sunrise, dozens of people — African, Asian, Middle Eastern, white — gathered on the hill to lay out their prayer rugs with their friends and families. Upon the conclusion of the prayer and a speech about becoming closer to God and appreciating one another, everyone, regardless of ethnicity or formality of dress, embraced and broke their fast together on the hillside.
