In Focus: Thank you, Pittsburgh

Last week, I was on assignment as the Penguins were visiting Avalon Elementary School. Iceburgh was lifting kids out of their seats and carrying them to the front of an auditorium for a trivia game. Every person in the school was smiling as a giant stuffed bird plucked children at random and paraded them around. What a Pittsburgh moment, I thought, taking notice of my own ear-to-ear grin. You’d think managing skates, helmets, pads and sticks for players like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin would be a great job, and it is, but it’s also a lot of work. Dana Heinze has been at it for 26 years, the past 10 as head equipment manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, which means he supervises and assists with everything related to player equipment.
