Gabriel McMorland, executive director of the Thomas Merton Center, said the items are going to be delivered to a couple thrift stores in the area with more storage space as Thrifty volunteers clear space for workers to make repairs on the store’s aging building, which has needed repairs to the electric, roof, HVAC system, and floor. Over the course of the pandemic Thrifty accumulated a bevy of donations as a lot of people were cleaning out their houses and there was a lot less foot traffic along Penn Avenue. Thrifty reopened in the middle of last summer to respond to the local need but is able to share some of what they’ve received. “Thrifty’s been in this storefront since 1993. Of all the places on Penn Ave., it’s one of the places with the strongest and longest connection with the neighborhood, and we want to keep it here,” said Gabriel. (Post-Gazette)
