Final mass at St. John Vianney

Hundreds of southwestern Pennsylvanians — many of them tearful, others stoic — packed St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church in Allentown for one of the most-attended services there in years Sunday.

The standing-room-only Mass could mark the last formal worship at the towering landmark if the Vatican upholds a shutdown decree from Bishop David Zubik. As of 12:01 a.m. today, the debt-laden parish has closed after losing 77 percent of its registered parishioners from 2005 to 2014.
