Greek deities rule at Shady Side Academy

Long-haired Poseidon roared, then flashed his menacing trident in a second floor classroom of Shady Side Academy. No worries — the trident was constructed of PVC pipe and cardboard. Still, Joseph Krokosky’s portrayal of the mythical god of the sea was quite convincing.

He and several other fourth grade students at the school dressed in costume as Greek historical figures and posed as “statues” on pedestals (really, they were decorated desks). Visiting parents pressed makeshift buttons and the figures came to life, delivering brief but forceful monologues.

Thursday’s event was the 18th annual staging of the schools Fourth Grade Greek Museum, an interdisciplinary class in which students learn about literature, writing, history, costume design and public speaking. Students research their assigned historical figures, design their own costumes, and write their own speeches. Fourth grade teachers behind the project are Marci Anderson and Lisa Budd.
