Volunteer Laryssa Charest organizes donated goods now packed into the social hall of St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Carnegie on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. The goods, headed for the people impacted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have been pouring into the church for two weeks and include everything from canned and packaged food to diapers and medical supplies. Especially useful are food items that can be eaten in a car — “food on the run” that’s easily accessible to people fleeing threatened areas of Ukraine. That includes canned soups with pull-top lids, peanut butter and granola bars. Other useful items are diapers and baby wipes that can be used to clean when water isn’t available. “If you’re stuck in a basement for a couple of days and you want to freshen up, those will work,” she said. The church has temporarily stopped accepting donations until a truck arrives to take those already gathered to New Jersey, where they’ll be shipped to Poland and Ukraine. One exception is medical supplies like bandages, Neosporin and gauze. “If you have medical supplies, we’ll fit that in,” she said.
